Fathers and Sons

He hands the boy some coffee,
from a thermos flask,
they never use.

Thanks Dad

Dad is thinking about something else.
Rugby is not a welcome distraction.

You're on.
Yes dad.

He hands back the coffee.

From the warmth of a Toyota estate car,
dad decides this is like torture for the kids.
The other dads agree in silence.

The kids look scared at each other on the pitch.
They have been taught to use that fear to win.
Which they do, and they are happy it ends,
so they can finally get into the bath,
in the hope that the pain will go away.

At least everyone is happy,
knowing the kids are one step closer,
to a 50k job in the dull of the city.
